Some Ioudaio-Lakonian Rabbis

Abstract

Evidence from rabbinic literature gives reason to think that an important rabbinic family from the late first and second centuries CE had strong connections with Sparta. These may be based on Spartan origin, formal relations of proxenia, the involvement of the Augustan-period Spartan adventurer Eurykles, or a combination of one or more explanations.
