Abstract

The meaning of Juvenal 3. 81 should be:  “Should I not run away from these folks’ shell games?” Rather than meaning “purple clothes,” the conchylia – the shells or “shell games” -- denote the Greek immi­grant’s infuriating πολυτροπία (versatility).
