Abstract

The paper describes in outline what information will be provided by the collection of milestone inscriptions to be published in the Corpus Inscriptionum Judaeae – Palaestinae. It will include the re-publication of a number of texts that are of broad historical interest. The collection will give a (necessarily incomplete) impression of the development of the system of Roman roads in the province. Part of the inscriptions will be seen as connected with major events in the region, such as large-scale military campaigns. Finally, it will advance the discussion about the question why, in the Roman Empire, public monuments were set up by the government in specific periods and less so in others.
